A note on Primaries:

The State Primary is an election in which the State’s political parties (currently Republican and Democrat) hold races within their own party to determine who will be the candidate for their party for an office in the general election (Tuesday, November 3, 2026 this year). Voters who are enrolled in a political party (Democrat or Republican), can only vote on their respective party ballot for Primaries. Since Unenrolled (aka “Independent”) voters are not enrolled in a political party, they may choose which party ballot to vote, but will remain an unenrolled voter regardless of their ballot choice.

For example, if two candidates of the same party are interested in running for Senator in Congress, they would first run against each other in the State Primary. In the example below, Democrat candidates A and C would each run against each other in the Democratic Primary for the spot as the Democratic candidate for Senator. The Republican candidates for Senator, B and D, would also run against each other in the Republican Primary for the spot as the Republican candidate for Senator. The winner of the Democrat Primary and the winner of the Republican Primary would then run against each other in the General Election.
