[ARCHIVED] Carlisle Poppy Display

A Community Art Installation of more that 3000 handmade poppies remembering the centenary of the end of World War One will be on display around the Town Center.

For the past 9 months the residents of Carlisle MA. including children and students, have been knitting, crocheting, felting and sewing more than 3300 red poppies which will be displayed in the town center from 2nd-15th November to mark the centenary of the end of World War One.

These community art installation will take place in Australia and the UK for "Remembrance Day" ( Veterans Day) on 11th November, but we believe this is the only one that will happen in the USA. Our display will flow from a cape of poppies around Lady Liberty in the rotary in the town center and across to the town common, where the Roll of Honor for veterans is located. The display will 'grow' from the 2nd -5th November to signify the increasing loss of life over the 4 years of the war. It is hoped that the installation will encourage all those who live, commute through, and visit the town centre to reflect on the significance, and loss of so many, during this horrific war.

The poppy lapel pin was created by an American woman, Moina Belle Michael after the poem by WW1 soldier, John Macrae, " On Flanders Field."

We have held workshops and inter generational creative days teaching people new skills throughout 2018 and managed to surpassed our goal of 3000 poppies. It has been a wonderful experience in empowering the community to create a place making art installation that has a certain amount of poignancy.
