Welcome to the Official Website for the Town of Carlisle
The purpose of this website is to provide information about your community, library, government, and school activities. This is a community endeavor, all are invited to collaborate. Your contributions and suggestions are welcomed.
The Town of Carlisle is a predominantly residential community located approximately 22 miles northwest of Boston. Once called “city of the woods” by Henry David Thoreau, Carlisle is still a rural community with over 30% of the land permanently protected open space. Carlisle residents enjoy the rural charm of a New England farming community with winding roads weaving past stone walls, fields farmed for generations, and unspoiled woods. The incorporation of Carlisle was a long and arduous process taking 72 years. The first recorded intention of incorporation was in 1732. In 1754 the District of Carlisle was approved by the Massachusetts General Court and existed for two years, five months, and 17 days before it was dissolved. In 1780 a new, larger, District of Carlisle was approved. Finally, in 1805, the Incorporation of the Town of Carlisle was approved.
The visual characteristics, combined with its geographical location and the commitment of its residents to providing a quality education for Carlisle children, make this community highly desirable.
